Post Op Care
After an extraction, the healing process begins with a blood clot. We have you bite on gauze for 20-40 minutes to assist in the clot formation.
If bleeding continues past the 40 min mark, place another gauze pad in and bite again for another 30 minutes. You may have to repeat this multiple times.
DO NOT
- Smoke
- Use a straw
- Spit or rinse mouth vigorously
Keeping the blood clot in the socket is our goal.
Ice bag alternating 20 min on 20 min off is encouraged to help with inflammation.
Take pain medication as prescribed alternating with over the counter medication as directed.
If an antibiotic is given, take it to completion.
The following day, you may begin light salt water rinses twice a day.
Rinse after every meal with regular water.
Resume normal dental hygiene after 24hrs.

Root Canal Post Treatment Care
The pulpal tissue of your tooth has been thoroughly cleaned out and irrigated with multiple solutions to ensure the canals are clean.
It is normal to feel some soreness in the area for the next few days as your body begins to repair the damaged area caused by the bacteria. Jaw soreness, biting pressure sensitivity and sometimes temperature sensitivity are normal occurrences for 72 hrs post treatment.
If symptoms persist after 72 hrs please call the office.
Over the counter medication will be recommended by the Dr. and it is important that you follow their recommendation.
Post Treatment Guidelines
Try to avoid chewing until the numbness wears off.
Try to avoid the tooth that has been treated for 72 hrs to allow the body to repair damaged bone.
Brush your teeth normally.
Call the office if any of the following develop:
- Increase in swelling
- Allergic reactions
- Pain returns to original level
- Bite feels uneven
